Taser Stun Guns: Questions And Answers

TASER stun guns are among the best-selling self-defense products sold on the open market today. Before you make the decision to purchase and carry this device for your self-defense, you might want to know the following:

What is a TASER gun?

A TASER gun is an electrical conducted energy weapon that uses electrical current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles. It will temporarily disable an attacker from a distance when high-energy, low amperage electricity from one of these devices passes through clothing and skin, and enters the body.

How did the TASER get its name?

Taser is an acronym for a fictional weapon: Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle (T.A.S.E.R.). Jack Cover, a NASA researcher, began developing the Taser in 1969. By 1974, Cover had completed the device, which he named after his childhood hero Tom Swift. Today the device is manufactured in Scottsdale, Arizona by TASER International.

Is it legal to carry a TASER?

TASERS are legal everywhere in the U.S. except in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. Additional cities, counties, and countries might have other restrictions on the use or possession of the TASER device so make sure to check all applicable laws and regulations carefully before you buy. In addition, Federal law prohibits the possession of Tasers on commercial airlines in carry-on luggage or on your person, but they may be included in checked baggage if you are traveling to a state that allows possession.

Are TASERS non-lethal?

Studies of TASER use have concluded that these devices are a safe self-defense tool. According to the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, 99.7% of all instances of TASER use result in no significant injuries. TASERS provide a non-lethal option, allowing private citizens and police officers to control a violent situation without risking their own safety, and in nearly all cases, without harming the criminal.

What happens when you fire a TASER?

When the device is discharged, compressed nitrogen charges fire two tethered needle-like projectiles at the target in order to deliver an electric shock. After the projectiles become attached to the clothing or skin an electric current is released and travels through the body. The target then experiences stimulation of his or her sensory nerves and motor nerves, resulting in strong involuntary muscle contractions. All this occurs in just under five seconds.

What are it’s effects on the human body?

When someone becomes the target of a TASER, the resulting “shock” is caused by an uncontrollable contraction of the muscle tissue for the duration of electrical jolt. This person then becomes temporarily paralyzed and falls to the ground — regardless of pain tolerance or mental focus. The target experiences no lasting effects.

How far does a TASER shoot?

Tasers can shoot up to 15 feet for civilian models, and should ideally be deployed at least 7 feet from away the target in order to ensure that the darts are spread at least 6 inches a part at their points of contact. The maximum reach of most TASERS is about 35 feet.
