Illuminated Manuscript

What do you know about illuminated manuscripts?
I need all the information people can give me about these.
Usually painted on animal skin, parchment or vellum. Book of Kells is the best example. Usually painted as either scriptures or hymns by monks back when each book was hand made and hand lettered. Lettering was often quite large so it could be read like sheet music from a stand in poor light. These were done mainly before the invention of the printing press. Single pages can be worth quite a bit and are framed for their decorative effect. Often they were written in Latin versus English or Irish or Italian. The ink and “paper” has lasted because of the lack of acid, found in later paper. Also they were usually well protected and kept from light. The Book of Kells is on display and looks brand new.
