The Golden Globe Awards are often also called “the dress rehearsal” for the famous Oscar or Academy Awards Ceremony that is held in USA every year and is considered to be the most prominent award ceremonies for the movie industry in the entire world.
“The Edge” is a twisted love story between a Russian war hero and a German woman fugitive set in the wake of World War II. The epic war drama with the budget of over $10 million involves an international cast with one of Russia’s most successful actors The Russian working in Hollywood in the limelight.
The lead actor of the Oscar-nominated drama The Thief, Vladimir Mashkov, enjoys the company of two up-and-coming actresses: an aspiring film and theater star from Germany, Anjorka Strechel, and an aspiring Russian actress, Yulia Peresild.
The Edge (Kray) is set in the autumn of 1945, somewhere at the edge of the world, in the Siberian taiga, where men and women camp laborers are working like dogs, supplying steam engines with fuel
Ignat, a war hero and a risky engine driver, arrives here to start life from scratch. The daredevil immediately starts having an affair with a local beauty, but their idyll only lasts until the day when Ignat comes across a deserted train with one passenger on board – a German girl who had been hiding inside throughout the entire war, which she wasn’t even aware of!
Once the Russian guy brings his “enemy-guest” home, the relationship with his local beauty is kaput.The Edge, from Russian director Alexey Uchitel, however is not all about love and tears.
As Uchitel explained, some of the leading roles in the film were in fact played by vintage steam locomotives.
“Locomotives appear to be very good actors. They seem to be alive when they hiss, and puff, and blow off steam; sometimes they are angry, sometimes they run off the rails. Our locomotives gave us a hard time! When we were shooting the last scene, one of our huge locomotives started moving, crashing into everything on its way. We managed to stop it only thanks to our professional engine driver, and there was panic on set,” the film’s director was quoted as saying.
He said that The Edge made an impact on him with the scale of its conception and the scope of shooting. “The challenge was to reach the hearts of the viewers,” the director said.The Russian drama is in the running for a Golden Globe in the Foreign Language category against such strong contenders like Biutiful by Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Concert from Radu Mihaileanu; I Am Love starring Tilda Swinton and In a Better World by Susanne Bier.
